You Only Live Once at the Tokyo Game Show

You Only Live Once has been selected as one of 10 indie titles to be presented at the Sense of Wonder Night at the Tokyo Game Show in late September. As far as I can tell, it’s the only flash game, although there’s one more browser game, the Japanese His and Her Disconnected Conversations.

This is by far my biggest achievement as an indie game developer so far. Some of my games have been mentioned in newspapers and once or twice even on TV but this… this is for real! And to think the genius behind Katamari Damacy, Keita Takahashi, is on the screening committee!

I’m trying to raise money for the airline ticket, which through some entirely untimely seasonal fluctuation is extremely expensive. I figured it can’t hurt to ask for donations from possible fans or passers-by¬† – my paypal is . I’d very much appreciate any amount, however measly!

Just thought it might be worth getting the word out: I’d love get my game Doeo out on WiiWare or Nintendo DS. I don’t mean converting the game, I mean like the transition Alien Hominid did from simple flash game to fully-fledged console game. Many more levels, quirky music, new features, power-ups, multiplayer modes: it would be a blast. It’d be the perfect casual game title for the Wii!

Doeo has been played more than 11 million times and has been featured on Miniclip (holding the third spot for top 10 games until just recently), and in various major blogs, magazines and newspapers. If you are an authorized WiiWare developer or otherwise in a position where you could help getting Doeo onto consoles, feel more than welcome to contact me.

The Doeo Aftermath

Things have started to calm down since Doeo hit the fan. The game has been doing reasonably to very good. I still have a few licenses of the game to ship out, but that’s mostly because real life has been keeping me busy.

I wish I could show you the game I’m working on now – it’s a crazy “Typing of the Dead” kind of game which my old faculty will use to teach first-year students to conjugate verbs in Japanese. The guy who wrote the script has a very odd sense of humor, which hopefully will show in the finished product. I will probably not be able to post the game online (the faculty is aiming to sell it to other universities), but maybe a few pictures later on. I really like some of the characters I’ve come up with for the game and I’m hoping I’ll be able to use them for my own projects, but the faculty owns the copyright, so it depends.

Good news if you liked Doeo, by the way! I’ll start working on the sequel next week. Also, I’m looking for a few artists to make backgrounds, if you’re interested, shoot me an e-mail! (I’ll be posting more detailed information about this later on).

Download Doeo!

All website developers, and others who want to experience a lag-free Doeo – you can now download Doeo from Newgrounds. It comes in a neat little zip package with a few .png thumbnails. If you love me, you’ll download it. If you want to upload it to your game, blog, whatever, feel perfectly free!

Also, Doeo is up on Kongregate since yesterday, please go there and vote on it! The higher my ranking, the better my chances to win a prize in their competition. So go there and vote!

Peace out.

New site up and running!

Long overdue, the new website is finally up. Until now, I’ve only been updating the site on those rare occasions that I’ve finished a new game, but from now on, that’s going to change. I’m no longer just going to showcase my own games, but all kinds of games. I’m also hoping to be able to get some exciting stuff on here that you can’t find at all the other game portals – for example, I’ve been thinking about talking to Japanese authors, and translating some of their stuff into English so more people can enjoy them.

What else will be worthwhile about this site? Well, I’m hoping to cater to flash makers like myself with in-depth interviews with flash gaming profiles and interesting articles. As an actual trained journalist (well, still in training to be perfectly honest) I’m sure you’ll find something to your taste.

I’d also like to apologize about the missing features and the in parts lackluster design, but I just had to get the damn thing online. Expect a lot of polishing and refurbishing here for the next few weeks.

And with those words, I’d like to officially declare the new up and running!
